What generic platforms are good at

Vapi, Retell AI and Bland AI are developer platforms. They sell the building blocks of a voice agent: speech recognition, a language model, a synthetic voice, telephony and an API. With an engineer or an agency you can build almost anything on them. They are flexible, fast to prototype and priced for usage. Retell includes 20 concurrent calls and pre-built templates on its pay-as-you-go plan, Vapi's Core plan starts at $29 per month and Bland's Start plan has no platform fee, according to their pricing pages in September 2026. For a software team with a clear spec, that is a good deal.

Where the work actually is

A garage's phone is not a clear spec. The caller says "the thing under the hood squeals when it is cold" or "my APK is due and the light is on again". The agent has to recognize the job, know how long it takes, find a bay and a technician who can do it, and read the answer back from the planner before it confirms. It has to know a tire swap from a full set, and a warning light that is a booking from one that goes to the mechanic on duty. On a generic platform every one of those rules is yours to write, test and keep current, in every language your callers use.

How Nekaf differs

Nekaf starts where the build ends. The vocabulary is there. The connectors to workshop planners, dealer systems and phone systems are there. The agent library covers the service desk, bookings, car-ready status, reminders and recalls, no-show recovery and more, each with one job and one dashboard. Before an agent goes live it runs a week in shadow mode on your real calls, scored by the Reviewer, a supervising agent that checks accuracy, tone and your rules. When something is wrong you mark the call in one click and the fix is tested before it ships. Data is stored in the EU for European workshops and in the US for American ones.

Cost, honestly

Generic platforms bill by the minute and stack the parts. Retell lists voice agents at $0.07 to $0.31 per minute, made up of voice infrastructure, text to speech, the language model and telephony, each priced separately. Vapi charges $0.05 per minute for its platform plus speech, model, voice and telephony, with a HIPAA add-on at $2,000 per month. Bland bundles model, speech and voice into one rate: $0.14 per minute on Start, or $0.12 with a $299 monthly platform fee on Build. These are published prices as of September 2026. None include the engineer who builds and maintains the agent.

Nekaf charges a monthly fee from $299 that covers the agent, the console, unlimited users, setup and support. There are no per-minute or per-seat charges. The fee follows outcomes agreed up front: calls answered and resolved, jobs booked, no-shows recovered. In a month where Nekaf books nothing and resolves nothing, you pay nothing.

Who should choose a generic platform

  • Software companies and agencies building voice products for many industries
  • Workshops with an in-house developer and the time to own the build

Who should choose Nekaf

  • Garages, dealerships, body shops and tire centers that want the phone answered this week
  • Workshops in the Netherlands, Germany or the United States that need Dutch, German or English with the right phrasing
  • Groups that need one standard across locations, with an audit trail
  • Owners who want to pay for results rather than minutes

Verdict

A generic platform is the right tool if you are building a product. Nekaf is the right tool if you are running a workshop. The difference is not the technology underneath. It is the thousands of workshop-specific rules, terms and connectors that have to exist before a voice agent can book a timing belt correctly, and who is responsible for keeping them right.

Frequently asked questions

Can I build a garage voice agent on Vapi or Retell myself?

Yes. You will write the prompts, connect your planner and phone system, define your escalation rules, test edge cases in every language and maintain all of it as your workshop changes. Nekaf delivers those pieces as a product and is live within 48 hours.

What happens to a call Nekaf cannot complete?

It goes to a person on your team with the transcript and a summary. Warranty disputes, complaints, complex diagnoses and doubt are always handed off. If Nekaf cannot take a call at all, it rings through to your team.
